Nimpkish River Food Fishery

Do you want to participate in the food fishery at the Nimpkish River?

The ‘Namgis First Nation takes pride in the fact that it has always looked out for the health of the Gw’ani River and voluntarily decided to close the river to fishing and implement other conservation practices. The goal of this was always to bring the river stocks back to abundant numbers. After many years of not fishing on the river, the ‘Namgis want to assert their right in managing the river and any potential future fisheries. We are going to be going over to the river on the schedule listed below to gather fish for the community. This fish will be distributed throughout the community. Participating in this fishery will help pass along and rebuild traditional knowledge regarding the river, traditional fishing methods.

The fishery takes about 6-8hours, so bring a chair, snacks, water and sunscreen. We will try to do a salmon BBQ over there when possible. Everyone is welcome to participate.

The fishery site can be accessed from the highway, or if you want a ride over on the boat please show up at the dock by the ferry terminal 15 minutes prior to the departure time listed below. You will need to bring your own lifejacket with you for traveling in the boats. If you need a lifejacket please contact Nic or Randy. If you have a boat that can help transport people across to the river also please contact Hank, Nic or Randy.

Children 16 years and younger need an adult to travel with them.

For more information on this fishery please contact Nic Dedeluk or Randy Bell at (250) 974-5556, Hank Nelson at (250) 956-4712.
