‘Namgis First Nation is inviting all community members to two community engagement meetings at the Council Hall on March 17, the first between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and the second between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The meetings will discuss potential protected areas in the ‘Namgis Territory, including whether/how to pursue protected area placement, what to protect in those areas and potential management of protected areas. Dinner/lunch will be served in both meetings, which were scheduled scheduled so that people who work can make either of the meetings.
These community meetings will follow a leadership meeting on the same topic on Monday, March 14, with the participation of hereditary chiefs and the elected leadership.
Specifically, the meetings are called because of the continued degradation of the environment surrounding our territory due to climate change and industrial activities and to provide input and/or consider alternatives to the federal/provincial/First Nations marine protected area network planning process currently underway across Northern Vancouver Island and the central and North coast of British Columbia.
Community members do not need to attend both meetings. Leadership is welcome in all of the community meetings.
