Royal Canadian Legion in Alert Bay
Screening of the documentary film about Gilbert Guella Popovich, mayor of Alert Bay for 28 years. The Autonomous Province of Trento, Office for Emigration, in collaboration with the Alert Bay Loggers’ Club invites to the screening of the documentary film by Paola Rosà and Antonio Senter.
Gilbert Popovich was a pilot, a logger, a fisherman, he run a fish processing plant and a fuel station, and he was the mayor of Alert Bay for almost 30 years. Ten years after his departure, friends, relatives and former colleagues and politicians recall his achievements and efforts for the community. “He worked for the whole island, for the benefit of our ‘Namgis neighbors, too”.
Coming from a poor family in Northern Italy, Trentino, he arrived in Canada following the dream of flying planes. He then settled down in Alert Bay and got involved in politics. “He’s always been a socialist, remembering the energy of his grandpa, who was forced by the fascists in Italy to drink cod liver oil every Sunday as a punishment for not being in favour of Mussolini”.
The film – 59 minutes – is based on public and private souvenirs through the voices of people who knew him well and shared with him the passion for politics, the love for family, the battle for justice and the joy of friendship.
